Here’s the Paper #4 Audio in-tumblr.
Denise Kupferschmidt has taken over our tumblr for the duration of Human Drama, the show she curated at Halsey McKay this March.
Did you know that Halsey McKay not only has one booth at Volta, the fair that has single-artist-booths as a rule, featuring the amazing Timothy Bergstrom, but they also have a special project featuring David Kennedy Cutler?? Imagining the nice echo between their displays makes me a little sad that I’m out here in East Hampton and not seeing what’s up at Volta, but that is why you should go for me!! Also it’s very nice here, you should come check it out! Hop on the Jitney or the train, both come right to the gallery, basically.

Back at the end of 2010, Ariel Dill and I curated a group show at Sara Meltzer Gallery (Leigh conveniently has this Time Out review of that show on her website!), then on 26th St. in Chelsea. I had just met artist Roland Allmeyer when we were both working for Rob Pruitt. Roland is the boyfriend of Leigh Ruple, and through him I found out about her paintings, and was really struck by them. Both of them are great artists, and Ariel and I included them in Tide Pool, which is what we called the show at Sara Meltzer, named after a pool of interdependent organisms. We thought that was a nice way to think about all of us as artists interacting in New York through our lives and careers, and it nicely echoed the philosophy of Apartment Show, which was essentially community organizing through art, but more fun.

Here’s an interview with painter Patrick Berran (not to be confused with Halsey McKay artist Patrick BRENNAN), the curator of a recent show at Southfirst Gallery featuring work by Jamison Brosseau, in which he talks about the practice of curating as an artist, something I am currently interested in thinking about. Ariel Dill, one of the artists in Human Drama, recently had a solo show at Southfirst (images here) called Oscillations, in which she paired recent abstract paintings with a wall-painting mimicking a wall in Gertrude Stein’s salon. And I have a drawing in a show that opens tonight at Southfirst that also includes Dan McCarthy, Michelle Grabner, and Andrew Guenther, and the aforementioned Patrick Berran, among others.

I’ve known the artist Patrick Berran for a while and have really enjoyed seeing his work move along. He’s doing some curating now and he’s put together a really nice show called Hello, Darling at Southfirst in…
